The Body Shop Aloe Soothing Rescue Cream Mask Review | Give Your Skin a Hydrating and Soothing Boost

Due to my extremely dry eczema, I love a product that is really hydrating yet calming for my skin. The Aloe mask is a perfect choice to give my skin a moisture boost, and because of the antiseptic properties of aloe vera it also assists with healing and soothing. I find that my eczema patches are a lot easier to maintain when I’m using this mask as it can form a barrier from irritants while in use.

Main Ingredients and Their Benefits

Water acts as a solvent and enables multiple other chemicals to work much better than if they were without water. As water is water, it is also suitable for all skin types and won’t be over-drying or make skin oilier.

Ethylhexyl Palmitate is an organic replacement to silicone. It is used to adjust the consistency of products as it has a dry slip feel.

Glycerin promotes skin cell maturation which can help fight effects of skin problems such as psoriasis. Plus it improves the appearance of skin in general. It is a humecant and helps the skin maintain it’s moisture which in turn makes the skin look healthier.

Propylene Glycol is used in small amounts to keep products from melting in high temperatures or freezing. It also assists active ingredients to penetrate the skin.

Pentylene Glycol is used as a solvent, preservative and synthetic humectant. It is both water and oil-soluble and can have moisture-binding and antimicrobial properties.

Dimethicone is a type of silicon that aids the product to glide onto your skin and also acts as a barrier after application. Dimethicone is used to protect mild skin irritations, dry patches or healing wounds, and is effective at locking in moisture thanks to its larger molecules.

Isononyl Isononanoate is a skin conditioning emollient that leaves a silky feeling on the skin.

Seasame Oil is a skin conditioning agent which reduces appearance of dry or damaged skin by reducing flakiness and restoring suppleness. It also reduces the loss of water by forming a barrier on the skins surface.

Glyceryl Stearate is a naturally derived fatty acid, most often used as an emulsifier. The skin is given a soft and smooth appearance as it acts as a lubricant as well as creating a barrier reducing water loss.

PEG-100 Stearate is used as an emollient, emulsifier and moisturiser although PEG stearates are usually known to clean the skin.

Lanolin and related ingredients moisturise the skin, hair and nails. It acts as a lubricant on the skin surface, which gives the skin a soft, smooth appearance. Lanolin helps to form emulsions and blends well with nearly all other substances used in cosmetics and personal care products.

Aloe barabadensis leaf juice powder is the powder form of the aloe plant. Obtained from dried leaves of the aloe plant it functions as a skin-conditioning agent.

First Thoughts

I was originally sceptical of overnight masks. What worried me most was getting the product in my hair or all over my bed sheets and pillow. Previous overnight masks have also given me bad reactions and clogged pores. The ‘barrier’ created also worried me as I wasn’t sure if it would reduce my skin healing itself in my sleep.

During Use

Because of my scepticism, I used the mask on my days off and I began by using it for a few hours during the day. The product is quite a thick product which leads to a clear film over the skin. This mask doesn’t dry like other masks, it spends most of its time trying to sink into the skin similar to a moisturiser. The first few times using the Aloe mask, it was strange having the ‘tacky’ mask on my face. Eventually, this started to feel more normal and it doesn’t rub off on anything either.

After Use

The Aloe Soothing Rescue Cream Mask is perfect for moisturising and soothing problem areas. I however rarely need to use it except for when I get bad eczema break outs on my face as my skin is already quite oily and doesn’t need something as intensive. I do enjoy using it in conjunction with other face masks though as this means I can target all my different problems without putting too much on my skin.

Would I Purchase Again?

I find that this is one of the best masks to use on my eczema as it doesn’t irritate it at all and soothes the symptoms. It’s also a really handy product to have during the winter months to reduce redness and dry skin. So I would for sure buy this mask again when and as the need arises for it.
