Uptown Oracle reads… Throw Away Girls

I received Throw Away Girls by Jennifer Vaughn as an E-book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

‘Hard-charging, insightful, and ambitious, Jaycee Wilder wants to take her TV news career to the next level. The Los Angeles reporter is hungry for the big story. When dead girls begin to pile up at seedy nightclubs that cater to whimsical, fetish-seeking strangers, Jaycee suspects a serial killer is at work. She aligns herself with an east coast cop trying to resurrect himself- and his once stellar career- from a drunken skid.’

Although pulled in by the book cover the storyline kept me guessing and on my toes throughout. The first chapter throws you straight into the deep end of the murder mystery, with my guesses constantly switching every other chapter as new evidence arises. I found the use of the killer’s perspective to be particularly powerful and enabled me to see his thought processes and connect with him as a character.

Jaycee’s strong presence and stubborn nature helps to make her an engaging character with who I could follow along on her reports. Vaugn has written each chapter to be of importance and without monotony, the story often taking unexpected turns and an atypical ending. Although not for the faint hearted due to brutal crime scenes, this book is definitely a winner. Book 1 of the Jaycee Wilder series and I can’t wait for more.
