Similar to many bloggers I started my blogging journey whilst a University student. I had way more time than I used to at school, and I had weirdly long holidays so I tried to make something that I could work on in my down time. But, as exam deadlines rushed, friends talked about socials and I also had a part time job – my free time suddenly felt like very little. So I had to adapt a bit, and created a system for myself to continue blogging.
Create a Schedule
I know, I know, I said this about blogging alongside a full time job too. But it’s so important to schedule out your time. If you know you’re at uni from 10-2 and work at 6pm then you instantly know that you have 4 hours to blog, eat, revise etc. It also helps to put in time specifically for blogging it helps you (although if that stresses you out and stunts your creativity then you don’t need to!). It’s really up to you as to how you want to organise your blogging, but schedule other elements of your life can help you to see how much time you have free.
Make Time to CREATE
Funnily enough, blogging isn’t just throwing some words onto a screen and hoping they stick. You need to make some time to sit down and be creative. Whether that’s a completely unique post you’ve not seen anyone else write about, or to switch it up with your photography. You need to make the time to think about and create what you want. Otherwise your blog will lack the personality you can bring to it.
Join the Community
You’re already in a brand new setting, so why not put some efforts into making online friends. Plus, there is always the chance that other bloggers live near you! So you can use that common interest to make a new friend while at Uni.
As a whole the community is fantastic as well! So even if they’re not close by, there will always be a shoulder to cry on if you’re struggling at uni. Or someone to say congrats if you’re doing really well!
Make it a Skill
Blogging is packed full of transferable skills that would look great on your CV or LinkedIn profile! As a student, this is a very real thing that you’ll be working on soon – so make sure you’re letting those hiring managers know you’re great with social meda. Show LinkedIn all those amazing photography skills you’ve built up. And know your worth as a content creator/copy writer/video editor because you’ve done it for the past 3 years at uni.
Be Realistic
Of course, University work should come first. You’re paying a shit ton of money to be there so you may as well try to get the best grade possible! So be realistic with how much time and effort you can put into the blog. You may need to take a break after Easter? So maybe you can build up to that with scheduled content! OR just take a break! No one will mind if you’re focus isn’t always on the blog.
Network
Another great thing that blogging can do for you is that you can Network. I’m studying marketing, which means when I get to talk to publicity agents I can also ask for advice for my studies and future career. You may have heard it’s all about who you know, not what you know – and this can be so right! If you know someone at L’Oreal already, then it can be a lot easier to get a job there in the future! So take some time to network and create relationships with the people you talk to through blogging.
