Uptown Oracle Reads… City of Lost Souls

City of Lost Souls is the penultimate book in The Mortal Instruments Series. It was also the first book in the series where I just couldn’t put it down. I finished this book in one day because I was just constantly wanting to know more.

City of Lost Souls* lacks many action scenes which were prevalent in previous installments. It makes up for this by being focusing on the desires, motives and overall personalities of the characters. I really enjoyed how Clare has seemed to sit down and flesh out all the main characters  to the point where you can fully understand them.

Another point was that you got to spend time with the antagonist, Sebastian, throughout the book. I love being able to second guess and try and understand the villains in books. It just brought a bit more depth and substance. Especially after the previous book took so long to even introduce the main villain.

The main issues were an overall theme of the characters making stupid decisions. But there is the case of the characters mainly being 16-18 year old’s. Therefore acting fairly in character for a teenager. The same sentiment goes for the romance. Most 16 year old’s think that their whole world revolves around their significant other. Explaining, somewhat, how Clary is written throughout the series.

I haven’t actually read the Infernal Devices series yet, but I know there were quite a few references dotted around. I would probably need to reread it after I read the prequel trilogy to find and understand them though.

I’m so happy there wasn’t another cliffhanger. Yes, the ending makes me want to read the next book, but it didn’t make me want to throw the book across the room in fury. Similar to CoFA, City of Lost Souls was an overall entertaining read.
