Legion is the penultimate book of the Talon series by Julia Kagawa, and it’s really bringing the action. I feel like so much is packed into this book. It’s made me excited to read the final one when it’s released.
We finally get to see dragon action in the war-setting that the previous books set up. I just loved the fact that we got to see so many dragons in their actual dragon form. Seeing as I picked these books because of the dragon element I was very happy about this. The one problem was I couldn’t picture the dragons sizing properly. So we know Ember and Cobalt are a lot smaller than adults, but I just struggled to picture the different sizes next to one another in scenes. I also struggled with dragons moving similar to humans in the writing. Maybe I skipped over what dragon’s look like in this world in the first book? But I was struggling in some scenes to imagine them.
The characters have all developed into these moral yet realistic soldiers. Our main three, Ember, Riley, and Garret have all changed so much from the first book. We finally get an end to the love triangle. Which was well overdue. Which meant there was more of a focus on the (real) problems they face.
We got to actually go inside of Talon bases and find out the things they do. We got to meet different employees and explore the base a bit. The world building around Talon hasn’t been great as our POV characters lack a lot of the information. So I really enjoyed Dante’s POV’s in this book to gain this information with him. It was really interesting to see the differences in what Ember thinks of Dante and what Dante’s really like as well.
I got about half way through Legion before I realised what had been bugging me the entire series. Skipped time seems to be an issue. POV characters passed out and awoke in a safe place with barely any explanation. So much could have been done with these gaps of time in other POV’s. Especially since there’s normally 3 POV characters together.
Overall, this was my favourite book in the series. Being packed full of action, intrigue and interesting plotlines increased the pace. So many characters were around that I actually liked. If you’re into YA Fantasy this is recommended.
