Winter Glass

I’ve done it again and read a book that wasn’t the first in a series… Winter Glass is the second in the Spindle Fire duology and although it’s a good book on it’s own, there were a few things which would make a reader very confused if they’ve not read Spindle Fire. Some plot points from the previous book are brought up, and there’s a lot of things that are touched upon slightly but not elaborated. I also felt that I wasn’t attached to the characters in this book, and I think this is mainly because they weren’t set up like they would have been in the first book. It does mean that I now want to read the first book!
The book contains strong female characters throughout and there’s very clear character progression and change throughout the novel. I do feel that there were a few big shock twists which had our characters having to adapt. This was a great way to encourage development and to ensure the characters are 3 dimensional to the reader.
This book covers Cinderella but extremely loosely. There’s barely a story there, except the symbol of the glass slipper being important for our characters. There are also a lot of other fairy tale easter eggs throughout. I thought I saw some of the ice queen and robin hood in the story which is great.
I did find that there were some questions that weren’t quite wrapped up, but I don’t want to leave any spoilers. But there’s some things which I questioned near the start, and I still don’t know about.
Overall I really enjoyed Winter Glass, but it did have a couple of issues which I’m putting down to reading out of order. I’ll probably come back to this after I’ve read Spindle Fire.
